Obituary for Thomas Carleton "Tom" Allen

Thomas Carleton "Tom" Allen
After a five month courageous battle with Leukemia, Tom passed away with his dear and devoted companion, Barbara at his side--which made his last minutes so much more peaceful. He was predeceased by his father (1944), son (1990), sister (2012), and beloved dog, Shasta (2014). Tom leaves behind his grieving mother, Audrey Toogood, as well as his brother, two nephews, and niece. Tom loved music, dining, movies, photography, travel, gardening and good conversation. He was especially devoted to the cause of social justice, and advocated passionately for prison reform, restorative justice, the homeless, and the marginalized in our society more generally. Tom conducted research at Triage, in Vancouver, for his Masters Degree at SFU, and wrote a book, Someone to Talk To, based upon this research. Tom went on to teach criminology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and was especially loved by his students. Many thanks to all those who had supported him including the staff and volunteers at VGH Palliative Care Unit for their remarkable care, love, and compassion. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA.
