Obituary for Earl Thomas Jewitt
Earl Thomas Jewitt, Chartered Accountant.
Earl was the beloved husband and best friend of wife Shirley (Kennard) for 63 years. He was a devoted father to daughters Cathy and Debora, and loving grandfather to Anthony. Earl grew up in Toronto and early on became the star player of the local ice hockey team, earning the nickname “Flash” for his agility and speed. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1944 and trained as a pilot. Fortunately the war ended before he saw major combat, unlike Earl's older brother Willy who was a successful fighter pilot.
After the war, Earl graduated from Queens University with a degree as a chartered accountant. Shortly thereafter, in 1951, he married his sweetheart Shirley Lorraine Kennard. The young family lived in Toronto and enjoyed many happy summers vacationing at Honey Harbor in Georgian Bay, Ontario with Earl’s brother Willy, his wife Flo and their son Billy.
In 1966 the family relocated to Victoria, BC where Earl joined the B.C. Securities Commission, eventually becoming Deputy Superintendent of Brokers. Earl, Shirley, Debora and Cathy traveled much of Vancouver Island, enjoying such places as Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Campbell River. Earl loved every aspect of the ocean, from swimming, to boating and fishing. He was a champion chess player in both Toronto and Victoria, a gardener, golfer, curler and avid football fan. Earl was proud of his unflinching honesty, genuineness and strong work ethic.
The Jewitts then moved to Vancouver in 1979, when Earl’s department changed locations. He retired in 1986 and from then on Earl and Shirley traveled extensively, including Europe, Malta and the Hawaiian Islands, which were a special favorite.
Earl’s motto was “don’t be bitter, be better”. We miss you terribly.
Earl is resting at Kearney Funeral Home, 450 West 2nd Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. where a private service will be held Monday, Oct 27th. Donations in lieu of flowers to the Vancouver General Hospital Emergency Department please.
