The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of John Varley can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Condolence From: Bob and Margaret Teranishi
Condolence: Bob and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Varley. He had been our family doctor for over three decades. He always knew what to say to reassure anxious patients with his calm and warm presence. We know this has been said many times before, but he truly was the best doctor we have ever had. Please accept our deepest sympathies on the loss of your father.

Condolence From: Dick Varley
Condolence: John was more like a brother to me In age we were only twelve years apart. My sister Pat and brother Ken were many years younger and did not have the same opportunity to share our early life. John's brother Bob (my Dad) would take us fishing. There is a picture of John and me with a pike fish caught in Long Lake (Regina Beach) which was as long as John was tall when held upright. Many occasions come to mind about our life in Regina. Sitting on the kitchen floor eating puffed wheat from a very large bag after John came home from working summer employment at Imperial Oil or painting grain elevators.

After relocating to B.C. We had several visits where we continued our adventures together. One in particular was John piloting us on a boat up the Pike River. My sister Pat has mentioned some of the shared experiences we had on our vistas to B.C. The last time we met up with John was in 2009 shortly after Louise had passed. We had a good visit,

Our condolences to the family who now celebrate the life of this talented , caring man.

Condolence: Dr Varley was not only my doctor for 3 decades but arguably more importantly he was my hockey coach. He was a leader, a mentor and a friend regardless of the connection to you. Coach Varley was an inspiration and played an integral role in shaping my life. I am forever grateful!

It was a privilege to share history with him. very sorry for your loss.

Condolence From: Pat (latchford) nee Anderson
Condolence: I was saddened to learn of Dr. Varley's passing. It will be the end of an era in Richmond. I was one of those little girls who had my tonsils taken out in their offices on No. 3 road. He and dr. Talmey actually let me take them home in a jar as a souvenir. Those days are gone forever! My parents, Eric and Hilda Anderson considered Dr. Varley a good friend as well as their physician during their lives. He was always there when we needed him. He made a house call the night my Dad died. I will always remember Dr. John Varley with great fondness. Thank you for all your years of devoted care.

Condolence From: Gordon Foster and Family
Condolence: On visiting my own Doctor for the last time today, as he is retiring, Dr. Morris Gordon (Richmond) informed me of Dr. Varley's passing, making this last visit even more poignant. I have always remembered Dr. Varley as a jovial, but learned individual who was always happy doing what he did best. Helping others.

I will always remember us both having a good laugh, when he asked me how I had injured a finger, requiring 3 stitches to close the wound. When I told him it was inflicted by one of our little Yorkshire Terriers, well.........we both just laughed !

That visit to my great Doctor will live on forever !

Please accept our condolences at this sad time. Gordon, Barbara, and daughters Louise and Caroline, all former patients in Richmond.

Condolence From: Ralph & Brenda Layzell
Condolence: We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to all the Varley family for their great loss.
John was our family physician for over 35 years and we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have had such a knowledgeable, caring person looking after us. There will never be anyone that comes close to his standard of care for us.
John was a great friend who taught our children to water ski and snow ski.
He had a great sense of humour and enjoyed practical jokes. Our family enjoyed many good times with the family at Osoyoos and Whistler.
We hope the family take comfort in all the good times they shared with John.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.
