Obituary for Bento Jose "Benny" Fernandes

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Benny Jose Fernandes on February 25, 2017 at the age of 82.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lydia of 47 years; his son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Caterina; son-in-law, Peter Szulc; his cherished grandchildren, Katarina, Nicholas, and Luca; his mother-in-law, Edith da Cunha; brother-in-law, Donald d’Mello; sisters-in-law, Noemie d’Mello and Sally da Cunha; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Clemente and Regina; his daughter, Joy; and his siblings, Cajetan (Sonny), Annie, John, Simon, and Martha.

Benny defined the word gentleman. He was genuine, kind, respectful, and considerate to all those he encountered. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and could often be heard telling stories about them. He enjoyed a successful career teaching Hospitality Management at BCIT and Vancouver Community College. Benny will be remembered for his culinary skills, for being a gracious host, and for his love of telling a good joke.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The Joy (Fernandes) Szulc Memorial Scholarship can be made at www.stpats.bc.ca and would be greatly appreciated.
