The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of John Evans can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Obituary for John Howell Evans

John Howell Evans
John always counted himself a lucky man, and he lived a long and healthy life. He was blessed with great friendships, a loving family, good neighbours and devoted dogs. Predeceased by wife Martha and son Ted, he is survived by children Stuart (Naomi) and Molly, grandchildren Masako, Michiko, Evan, Kazumi, Elizabeth, and great-granddaughter Amelia.

He was pleased to have lived long enough to know his first great-grandchild, and to see his well-loved grandchildren settled with partners he delighted in. Born in Sheffield, England, John moved to Canada as a child.

He was educated at St. Alban’s school and Sedbergh, where he had many adventures and made lifelong friends. In the 1960s he moved, with wife Martha and their young family, from Montreal to Vancouver. An avid waterfowler, he spent many happy hours on Westham Island and at Lakemount in the Fraser Valley. He liked nothing better than to have a project in hand, and his workshop was well-equipped and exceptionally ordered.

John had a kind and generous nature, a great sense of humour, and a zest for storytelling. Ninety years is a long time but, for those who knew him, it seemed too short.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
