Obituary for Paul Schulz

Paul Schulz
The family of Paul Schulz is deeply saddened by his untimely passing at the age of 48 on the morning of October 24, 2017 - a few days after heart surgery. He is survived by two young children- daughter Raven and son Jade, their mother Kate Kristo, brothers Chris, Johann, Peter, Richard, Joerg and sister Ingrid Gabert.

Paul was born in Saskatoon on January 3, 1969. He was predeceased by his twin brother shortly after birth and our father in 1976. Our mother remained a single parent the rest of her life (2015) and instilled a love of performing as well as a wanderlust spirit in him.

At a young age Paul started collecting movie magazines and went on an impromptu trip to Los Angeles with mom and three of the youngest brothers. He stood next to his favorite stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and placed his hands and feet in their cement prints!

Paul began recreating historical scenes such as Stonehenge out of modelling clay or carving balsa wood. He started to dream about becoming an archeologist but performing continued to reel him in. Then Indiana Jones and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" helped him realize he could combine archeology and acting.

Paul enrolled in Drama at the U of S and was mentored by Walter Mills and Henry Wolfe. That led to many years with the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival. He performed with mom in Gateway Summer Players productions like "My Fair Lady" and she became a regular support for the Bard.

At some point he created his independent company PS Productionz. He always signed that inscription on his work like caricatures of friends on movie-themed posters of the Pirates of the Caribbean & Ghostbusters (Len Busters)

Paul followed acting opportunities by moving to Vancouver. He continued with some live Theatre while he built a reputation that went from extra to stand-in to body double - most notably for Owen Wilson.

There were many interesting roles for Paul and he'd create snippets from various TV series (Once Upon a Time, Stargate) and movies (Night in the Museum, Renegade, Deadpool) we could play a form of Waldo to see who could spot him first.

One of his early breaks was The X-Files, which turned into a spinoff with The Lone Gunman. The series Arctic Air allowed him to rub shoulders with some great Canadian actors. He was also enjoying working on the set of Where Lies the Heart. Last year an opportunity to play the saxophone led to a speaking part and that's the direction his career was heading...

There must have been something in the water the year Paul was born because many of his classmates were creative writers, musicians and entrepreneurs. Many came together the last night of Paul's life and gave him a send off he would have loved.

Above all else, Paul's children were the love of his life. They embarked upon a Canada 150 trek that lasted the entire summer and they went from coast to coast. A comment he posted half way through the trip is worth repeating, saying "I am in a state of exquisite thankfulness that the universe aligned to allow me the opportunity to make this journey of discovery with the two most important spirit beings in my life. Can never say it enough - I love my kids.”

With that in mind, a Go Fund Me site is available if anyone wishes to add to it - a trust fund will be established for Raven and Jade.
