Mentor and Friend

It was a little over 35 years ago when I first met Pat. I remember coming to Vancouver for the first time for my  internship.  Pat was working at the same firm along with another good friend Ed.

My first impression of Pat was that he was such a hard worker.  Even though he worked long hours, Pat was always willing to answer questions and to show me the practical side of engineering.  He impressed me with his work ethics and his incredible amount of knowledge.  I learned a lot from him and looked up to him as a mentor and I can honestly say I wouldn't be where I am now without his help and mentoring.

Being from the same university, we fast became more than just colleagues.  Even though we worked long hours, we found time to have fun, going out to dinner and watched movies at the theatre together on many weekends.  I remember sneaking out together with a bunch of other friends during work to watch Star Wars.  It was a fun time indeed.  Pat was one of a few people whom I can call my good friend.  I would like to think that he also considered me his good friend as well.

If I was to describe Pat with one word, I think that word would be professional.  He was always meticulous, thorough and deliberate.  He never did things without planning well ahead of time. From Pat, I learned what it takes to succeed as an engineer:  that is to work hard, to have a positive attitude, to never give up, to be thorough and to always be learning.

Pat, thank you for being a mentor and a good friend.  I will always cherish your friendship.   I will miss you and the enlightening conversations we had with your unique view of the world.  You've worked very hard in life and you've left a legacy through your influence to all of us to help us become better people.  Perhaps it's time for you to take some well deserved rest.
